I still have fond memories of the anticipation surrounding the release of this film. It was probably the first time I watched a trailer on the internet (before the days of streaming and broadband in my house, it literally took about 5 hrs for it to download) and I was really excited. I was doing a student work placement for Walker's Crisps and due to a corporate partnership with Star Wars and Pepsi, a lucky few of us got to see the film a couple of weeks before general release. I actually enjoyed it on the first viewing, but I went with some friends to see it on general release, the flaws stood out like a sore thumb. Despite the negatives (Jake Lloyd, Jar Jar, a clunky script even by Star Wars standards), there are some positives; the pod race and the 3-way duel the obvious high points.
Whilst the film is average at best, I really enjoyed the poster campaign. The teaser featuring Anakin with Vader's shadow is simple but really striking and i think Drew Struzan's art for all 6 Star Wars films is typically beautiful work.
