The Good, The Bad and The Ugly
Single Sided French Poster, Folded, 47 x 63"
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly closely pips Once Upon a Time in the West as my favourite Sergio Leone film. The peak of the dollars trilogy, Eastwood, Eli Wallach and Lee Van Cleef are fantastic as the battling trio in a race to confederate gold against the backdrop of the American Civil War. The film is packed with humour and action and Leone's unique direction is always thrilling, whether it's close ups of squinting eyes or expertly composed long shots containing hundreds of extras. Ennio Morricone's score is absolutely beautiful and although the theme is perhaps his most famous composition, The Ectasy of Gold scene is a pure rush of visual and musical joy as Tuco races between the graves and the operatic voices soar...it's my definition of cinematic perfection! In my opinion, Jean Mascii's art for the French poster is the best for the title. The Mexican stand off and the civil war are good, but it's the stunning portraits of the main protagonists that make it such a good looking poster. Judging by the printer information (more detail on that here), this poster is from a re-release in 1975. It's identical to the original release except for that detail and there is also a poster for a later re-release that is on a glossy paper. |
